Monthly Summary
Totals: 4 accidents, 1 fatal accident, 2 fatalities
- The total of 4 accidents during the month was the lowest count for a January since FY17.
- The monthly accident total had not been at 4 or lower since December 2020.
- This was the first month so far in FY22 without a personal/private accident.
Cumulative FY22 Summary, Oct-Jan
FY22, Totals: 32 accidents, 8 fatal accidents, 13 fatalities
Accidents:
- Through 4 months, the estimated accident rate was 3.58 per 100K hours.
- Instructional/Training has accounted for the highest percentage of accidents (22%), followed by Personal/Private (19%)
Fatal Accidents:
- The Oct-Jan estimated fatal accident rate was 0.89 per 100K hours.
- In spite of zero fatal accidents in January, Personal/Private still had the highest percentage of fatal accidents, accounting for 63% (5 of the 8 fatal accidents).
- The percentage of accidents with a fatality is trending in a tie for the highest in the past 10 years (25% of accidents with a fatality).
Fatalities:
- The FY22 estimated fatality rate through January was 1.45 per 100K hours.
U.S. Helicopter Safety Team (USHST) Calendar Year Metrics
- Goal: Reduce the 5 year average fatal accident rate to 0.55 per 100K hours by 2025. The USHST uses the 5 year average fatal accident rate from CYs 2014-2018 (0.62 per 100K hours) as their baseline for measurement.
- The CY 2018-2022 5 year average fatal accident rate was 0.79 per 100K hours through January 2022.
